Children and adults learn very differently, and a good teacher will recognise and allow for this. When you arrange drum lessons for your child, it is important that you can trust your drum teacher to deliver a fun and effective course of drum lessons, tailored to the needs of the student. I have a wealth of experience in working with children and teenagers, and enjoy making music fun and relevant for young people.

I teach drum students of all abilities, aged ten and above. By this age, children are responsive to the more technical components of one-to-one music tuition, and can appreciate the importance of individual practice.

My private drum lessons are offered on a one-to-one basis. This means I can customise each lesson to your child's progress, needs and ambitions. Every child is unique, and I always keep this in mind when I am teaching: every lesson is designed to ensure that the student is learning and progressing, while gaining enjoyment and satisfaction from their musical education.

Further Advice for Parents

If this is the first time your child has had lessons then I'm sure you'll have many questions. I have tried to answer some of these below, as well as on the
Frequently Asked Questions page and in the Rhythm Section advice area. However, please do not hesitate to contact me personally with any queries you may have.

Child Safety
The safety, happiness and wellbeing of your child is of paramount importance to me. I recommend that all parents download and read the full Child Protection Policy.

All Ages?
I teach drummers of all abilities, aged and ten and above.

Recommended Drum Lesson Durations
For children of ten years and above I've found that weekly one-hour lessons are the most beneficial. Fortnightly lessons are also an option.

Do I need to own a drum kit?
No! Beginners do not need to own a drum kit. Parents might consider contacting their local school to see if their children might use school drum kits during break times and after school. Before you do spend any money, find out about buying your first drum kit.

I recommend that every student owns a pair of good quality drumsticks. After a few lessons, you might also like to consider purchasing a practice pad and a metronome (
what are these?).

Taking Drum Grades
In many cases, drum grades can provide a useful benchmark of your child's musical progress. Accordingly, I encourage students to consider undertaking drum grades, if they wish to do so. I teach all grade levels (i.e. grades 1 to 8) in the Rockschool grading program. Of course, students should always treat learning to play drum kit as their immediate goal, not learning to pass grade exams. However, by taking grades, students can gain satisfaction and motivation from seeing themselves improve. As a parent, you can be reassured that your child is following a structured and progressive drum syllabus with specific, short-term goals. Find out more about taking drum grades in Cardiff.
